How to Check Your Nigerian Passport Application Status

You can follow your Nigerian passport application online with the reference details you received when you applied, no agent required.

Step by step

1. Open the official tracking portalVisit track.immigration.gov.ng, the Nigeria Immigration Service passport tracking page. Confirm the address is on the immigration.gov.ng domain.
2. Enter your application numberType the application number issued when you submitted your passport application. It is on your receipt and acknowledgement email.
3. Enter your reference numberAdd the reference number that came with your application. Both fields are required before the status will display.
4. Submit and read the statusSubmit the form to see your current stage, for example whether it is processing, ready or requires action.
5. Follow up if neededIf the status stalls or asks for action, contact or visit your chosen processing office with your reference details and a valid ID.

What you need

The portal asks for two things: your application number and your reference number. Both are generated when you submit your passport application and appear on the receipt and in the acknowledgement email the service sends you. Enter both exactly as shown, since the status will not load until both fields are filled. Keeping these numbers safe from the day you apply saves a lot of stress later.

Reading and acting on the status

Once you submit, the portal shows your current stage, which may indicate that the application is still processing, that it is ready, or that it needs some action from you. The immigration service also pushes updates by email and SMS, so keep an eye on those channels, including your spam folder. If your record asks for a correction, act promptly through the official channels rather than a middleman. If the status stalls or the numbers are lost

Processing times differ by office and by passport type, so an unchanged status for a short period is normal. Keep your details private

Genuine tracking only needs your application and reference numbers. No official passport process asks for your BVN, bank details, card PIN or a one-time password to ‘release’ or ‘speed up’ a passport. Be wary too of social-media accounts and ‘insiders’ who claim they can push your file forward for a fee, as they cannot, and they often disappear once paid. If you receive such a request, it is fraud; do not pay and do not share anything, and report it through the proper channels.
